Some of you are probably aware I also play in a fun loving band, Diddly Squat. We were in rehearsal this week, and it strikes me that we mimic all the motions of a successful band but without the glory of millions of fans, fame and monetary fortune. Despite this, we all love being part of the band. Why? Well, we love the camarederie and the chance to do things that we wouldn't normally do. Apart from that, we get to dream. We imagine ourselves shredding guitars at Wembley Stadium, having an entourage of roadies, going on tour in a custom fitted bus, trashing hotel rooms, and signing albums at Shopping Centres.

Luckily for us, dreaming is free!
Ironically it is often in the dreaming that we have the most joy.

So, the thing we've been dreaming up lately is an upcoming gig "Diddly Squat Demystified" - this Saturday night at a funky cafe/bar, The Green Owl, Brisbane. It'll be an interactive evening, sharing insights of our journey, lighthearted trivia games, and we'll play a few new original songs + some old faves.

Grab some friends and join us. It's not totally free, but it'll be cheaper than seeing us at Wembley.

Well here we go, launching a new song into the world. It feels like I'm on the banks of the Varanasi River gently pushing candles into the vast flowing torrent.

This feels like a special one, and filled me with goosebumps as I was writing and testing the lyrics for the first few times.

It comes from the well of emotions traversed witnessing my mother coping with dementia. It's a portrait of ageing, memory loss, living in the present, and ultimately a song about love.

Have a listen - love to know if it speaks to you, and share the word.

The thing about acting is that you get to be characters who are so removed from your everyday life.

Lately I've been parading around as a slightly neurotic cop in MATES Theatre Genesis's production of Neil Simon's comedy "The Odd Couple- Female Version" - directed by Debie Spearitt.

Last week, after the show, an elderly gentleman murmured in my ear "You can be my sergeant any day."
I waved my truncheon playfully at him. "Oh no, don't use that thing on me!" he exclaimed.
"Handcuffs?" I asked
"Handcuffs would be fine," he said.

ahem, and I always thought uniforms were to pull chicks!

It's been a privilege to be working with such a terrific cast and crew

Final shows are this Friday 16th & Saturday 17th June - 7:45pm at Birkdale Hall, Birkdale, Redlands.

We're currently in the midst of final acting rehearsals for the "Australia Day" play which opens on Australia Day at Redland Museum. After 3 months immersed in it, I have to say it's been an absolute delight working with director, Ray Noonan, and fellow cast and crew from Mates Theatre Genesis.

I have vivid memories of feeling overwhelmingly awkward at school Speech and Drama classes, so it's been a wonderful surprise to discover that acting can be a ton of fun. It's a learning curve for sure, but I've got an inkling that's what makes it so enjoyable.
My biggest lesson in this latest sojourn:

Drop the judgement!

Allow yourself to experiment and explore without judgement and wondrous things may develop.

.... it actually works

If you'd like to catch the show, it's a witty and irreverent take on our national identity, with some archetypal Aussie characters including: Wally the redneck builder, Brian the local mayor running for pre-selection in a federal seat, Roberta, his loyal and upstanding deputy, Maree, the ol' dear from the Country Womens' Association, Helen, the local Greens Councillor with a disabled son, and the character I play - Chester - an Australian Born Chinese School teacher who just loves to ham it up...

oh and I get to sing a bit too!

It was a 12 minute prepared speech fashioned along the lines of a TED Talks event. It surprised me that I put myself forward, but on reflection I realise that I've had a long held fascination with Public Speaking.

In Grade 1, I spontaneously put up my hand to do a "Show and Tell" morning talk. I was super excited - our family had just returned from a trip to Mt. Isa, and I thought I had some interesting stories to share. Alas, when I walked to the front of the classroom and saw the sea of expectant faces staring at me, I froze. I stood there paralysed, trying to find the words, one word, any word...

After what seemed like an eternity, my very kind teacher, Mrs Johnson suggested I might like to sit down and perhaps speak again on another day. Well I never felt the desire to proffer myself again, but there were a number of occasions in the ensuing years, where it was no longer a voluntary exercise, but a compulsory activity.

I learnt from that experience the importance of preparation, and that with preparation, one could deliver a half-decent talk. On the occasions, where I've had to speak, I came to understand that Public Speaking really starts with the writing, which is an activity I've always savoured.

So last month, I found myself actually enjoying the challenge of delivering an engaging speech, sharing my story and experiences on "getting comfortable with being uncomfortable." Afterwards I found myself feeling incredibly liberated and ready to tackle more of my phobias.

The next day I saw an ad for a free acting course with the Sydney Theatre Company for Asian Australians - "no prior acting experience necessary". To my surprise, I observed myself thinking "Yes I'm ready to try that!"

Now I should say here that "Acting" is one of those things like "Singing" that have been on my bucket list of things to avoid. My parents enrolled me in Speech and Drama classes as a kid to get me to come out of my shell... it never worked and I abhorred those classes with a passion.

So I was gob-smacked to watch myself completing the application form and hitting the Submit button. I don't know yet whether I'll be accepted for this course, but the Universe has an uncanny way of delivering.

A week later I heard a local Community theatre group were looking for an Asian Australian to fill a role in an upcoming play. Forty-eight hours later, this little goose has signed up for the part. So.... the start of another adventure. I get the feeling this is one of those pivotal steps which will lead to a new level of learning and more unfurling.

Sufficed to say, I'm slightly terrified, but not nearly as much as I thought I would be! If I don't bail out beforehand, the play titled "Australia Day" will open for a short season at Redlands Museum on Australia Day!

Standing at the kitchen bench, peeling carrots recently, it strikes me that the journey of recent years has been a marriage of DESIRE and FEAR.

There's been this carrot of possibilities constantly dangling in front of my beak...the possibility of creating something glorious and beautiful, the possibility of momentarily connecting with another being. As the story goes, to taste the carrot, one has to bust through the fear... the fear of being judged, the fear of failing, and ultimately the fear of being a complete goose.

If the desire is stronger than the fear, challenging the fears becomes a necessary, even if somewhat uncomfortable process. The unexpected thing is, when you bust through the fear, the joy is exponential. Exponential, because coming out the other side, invites even more possibilities and new experiences....
and yeah that probably means more opportunities to be uncomfortable.

It's good to be a little uncomfortable. Ironic that carrots, are my favourite colour!

Big thank you to the folks who've come along to recent gigs and to the wonderful people at the recent Winterbreak retreat, where I had the opportunity to participate in Michael Fix's guitar workshops, and collaborate & perform with talented singer-songwriters Kim Banffyand Jodi Murtha.

One of the joys of experiencing art of any kind, whether it be visual art, music, poetry, novels, is the chance to glimpse the world through the eyes of another human being.

Often the designers and photographers who help shape the image of a musician go largely unacknowledged.

I'm so proud to congratulate Chris Hall for taking out the Best PR Photo Award at the recent QLD MUSIC DESIGn AWARDS ...and what was the photo?....none other than the cover shot from my album "dreams of a wildgoose".

Chris did an astounding job with the album artwork. I asked her to make the album cover that matched the music - and I reckon she nailed it! It so aptly symbolises my musical journey, which has been one of unfurling on so many levels. It represents joy, growth, possibilities, and pays tribute to my cultural heritage, and my place in the world as a "wildgoose".

Congratulations Chris!!! & such a gracious acceptance speech.

Happy goose.
Ann Leungtag:annleung.com.au,2005:Post/61415632016-01-13T10:00:00+10:002021-07-28T07:19:12+10:00a gaggle of real musos

I never imagined that making music could be part of my life experience, particularly since I've had a long held aversion (since kindy) to singing & performing. After accidentally writing my first song 5 years ago, I found myself so wrapped up in the joy of creating something new, that learning to sing and perform became a natural and necessary part of the journey.

Here's the video footage of the debut album launch concert ....i's not a flawless performance by any means, but certainly a milestone for this lil goose playing with a gaggle of real musicians, and being responsible for putting together a whole show.

On reflection, I realise the value is as much about the journey of unfurling, as it is the actual collection of songs.
Don't we all do our best work when we follow what truly fires and grows us?

Thank you all the beautiful folk who were there for the Live Launch of the new album.
It was wonderful to have some friendly supporters in the audience.
Thank you for for being so receptive and for laughing in just the right spots.

"what a pleasure it was to work on your record. Michael has excelled at capturing your songs, and the songs and 'vibe' are superb. The tracks are sounding beautiful. It is a special record." - Dave Neil (Mastering Engineer)

"Ann came to me as a novice, and I very quickly realised that hers is a unique talent, waiting to blossom. The process of gently coaxing the haunting, (sometimes fragile) songs out of her, was a rewarding experience for me as a record producer. I believe Ann has something very special, creating music of rare and delicate beauty." - Michael Fix (Producer)

"stunning new album by Ann Leung. Utterly beautiful.... breathtaking." - Nadia Sunde

"Sublime, moving, grounding, ethereal, beautiful....This album at once speaks of a humble & gentle soul who is the composer. The music sounds simultaneously grounded , unpretentious & yet heavenly. The songs thread together creating a concept album whose theme reflects a beautiful calm." - Sadie Gwynn Jones

Preview Album Now

"It's been my constant companion in the car for the last few days and I never tire of listening to this epic but peaceful music. I find myself uplifted and transported away from my stress and worries. There is such a spirituality, thoughtfulness and feeling of space to this music ….. life is far too busy but ahhh…. it’s so nice to reflect and contemplate. Simply divine musicianship and arrangements from the guest musicians as well. Five honking stars from me …." - Juju Minto

"...a gorgeous, ethereal and entrancing album!! Wonderful songs from Ann have been brought to life by the extraordinary recording, playing & production talents of the magical Michael Fix.... . There are also a host of other talented musicians & performers. This is a fantastic album - lovely collection of original songs, brought to life in an exquisitely beautiful way, sung superbly by Ann!! Sheer musical heaven. Go & buy a copy before it sells out" - Ian Dearden

"it moves me, draws me in and hugs me, takes me on a journey. Just brilliant... " - Leanne Phillips

"Ann Leung has created a wonderfully sincere and honest album. To take the concepts of peace, joy and hopefulness and present them as understandable songs you can relate to easily is a gift. Musically Ann has explored a myriad of sounds yet they blend harmoniously and create a soothing beautiful backdrop to her central message of harmony and love. This album can add joy to your life." - David Penman

"Right from the very first track of honking wild geese in flight, you are transported to a magical space filled with top quality lyrics, stories, musicianship and melodies, with the beautifully soft, lilting vocals of Ann and her friends. There are so many layers to these thought provoking tracks. Fabulous musicianship from all those involved, with many of my favourite Brisbane artists contributing to the gorgeous melodies with stylish precision, harmonies and instrumentation. What a joy it has been to listen to this uplifting music and to share in Ann's journey. The CD cover and inserts are beautifully put together with photographs by the very talented Chris Hall. I will be listening to these tracks over and over. So serene. So inspirational. It transports you to a state of bliss where troubles melt away and you feel in touch with your own personal Angels. This CD has my highest recommendation. Make sure you get your own today." - Kara-Mia

In the last couple of weeks, Dave Neil has been mastering the album, adding sparkle and final oomph, and we've been busy on album artwork. We found a glorious yellow wall at a local Buddhist temple - perfect backdrop for a photoshoot with my favourite orange cloth.

What's the story of the orange cloth? I've always loved "orange" and a few years ago, a friend who knew my love for orange, handed me an old orange tablecloth. I immediately felt very connected to this piece of cloth. I love looking at it, touching it and wrapping it around me...yes an unhealthy love affair!

Anyhow, had a wonderful day unfurling it in the sunshine. We've got some glorious shots of it "doing it's thang" and I'm a happy goose!

So proud of this album & grateful to all who have been involved in it's making....looking and sounding splendid!
Stay tuned for where you can get your hands on a copy soon.

It's been a glorious couple of months working with producer Michael Fix on the debut cd. One of the highlights.. recording the Winterbreak Choir at Mt Tamborine. Checkout this short video of "behind the scenes" action from up the mountain.

We now have final mixes ready for mastering, and I'm about to get out the paintbrush and play with images for the album art.

The album name has also evolved - "dreams of a wildgoose"
My name in Chinese means "wildgoose" - I've always felt like more of a "goose" than an "Ann"!

Thank you to all the guest musicians who've dropped in to add their touch -

Sarah Calderwood - flute, whistle, angelic vocals

Suzanne Hibbs - getting creative on percussion

Mirko Ruckels - who plays piano with such sensitivity

Rebecca Wright - searingly beautiful cello

Angela Toohey - who sang just 2 lines of backing vocals -but Oh they made a huge difference.

Chris Hall - backing vocals, and my sounding board

and a Big Thank You to the Winterbreakers who sang with such gusto!

Winterbreak is an annual music retreat held in a beautiful mountain envrionment at Mt. Tamborine Queensland, and has been pivotal to my musical journey. I attended my first Winterbreak in 2011 and "found a voice", as well as a wonderful supportive community.... So, it was very special to record the Winterbreakers adding a bit of "oomph" to two tracks - "Mahatma" and "Mia's Song".
Checkout this short video of "behind the scenes" action from up the mountain.

There'll be details soon of where to get your hands on a copy.
Meanwhile, planning is underway for a CD Launch.
Have I ever put on a show before? No, but that hasn't stopped me dreaming of a multimedia sound and light experience, rich with images, smoke machines, bbq pork buns, and yeah ok, maybe we'll have to play a few songs from the CD!

New single & video - "Mahatma" released today! I'm really excited to be sending this one out to the world.

Organic tribal rhythms, Psycehdelic sitars, tabla drums... an uplifitng tribute to the life and spirit of Mahatma Ghandi.

For over a year, I've had a Ghandi quote hanging on the back of the toilet door: "Everything you do will be insignificant, but it's very important that you do it". For months I've been contemplating the meaning of this, and not quite understanding how it applied.

I guess the little bald guy has been hanging around in my subconscious & out popped "Mahatma", and I reckon now I understand the meaning of those words a little more.

This song and video feels "insignificant" in the world scale but "important" all the same for it's message of peace.

Take a gander at the video - it's my first foray dabbling with animation and has been a ton of fun to produce. Hope you get a smile out of it! Watch Mahatma Video
